... “The album was conceived and completed in true DIY fashion.” notes Lock. “We came up with the songs using our own language of song structure, our own special way of working together. We recorded it with what we had as far as equipment goes, pretty much on a shoestring of a budget. We were lucky that people who were interested contributed their time and talents for the most part for free. Everything down to the CD artwork was done completely on our own.”
Katzchenkollision was released to praise and charted on independent radio stations throughout the country. Since its release original member Lacy departed the group but will contribute to the band’s second full-length studio release. According to Ottaway, “We have already recorded several tracks for the album and expect to have it completed this Spring. The new songs exhibit more confidence and passion. In general the songs are heavier and more intricate but still maintain the original pop sweetness and familiar analog tones. We’re fortunate to be working with Ryan Drury of the electronic project Cat Five. He is not only a great engineer and producer but completely understands what we intend to accomplish on this album.”
Secret Synthi continues to deliver a warm analog feel in their music, and prefer to work with their tempermental vintage equipment over today’s digital laptop variety any day. “Pretty much every show at least one thing is broken, but it’s worth it! It brings that little extra excitement to each performance.” says Lock. Ottaway adds “We’re just gonna keep applying more duct tape and solder to our not-so-trusty equipment so we can keep making the music we love.” (November 2004)
